IDOR 2026 - EN35: Sustainable, Scalable Recognition: Ireland’s RPL Higher Education Project

A recording from the International Day of Recognition - June 9, 2026 ************ Dr. Ciara Staunton Technological Universities Association (TUA), Ireland Sustainable and scalable Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in Irish higher education has been advanced through the work of the National Recognition of Prior Learning in Higher Education Project and its central platform, priorlearning.ie. The Project, which commenced in 2020, is funded by the Human Capital Initiative (HCI) and co-sponsored by the Irish Universities Association (IUA) and the Technological Universities Association (TUA) and has worked collaboratively with 14 partner Higher Education institutions across Ireland and other key stakeholders to develop and promote RPL practices across the sector. The overall aim of the project was to realise the potential of RPL and life-long learning opportunities. Key outputs include the collaboratively developed Pilot Framework for RPL in Higher Education, which promotes coherence, consistency, and mainstreaming of RPL across institutions. The Technical Definition of RPL in Higher Education further strengthens sectoral capacity through standardised data, definitions and practice. Complemented by the Digital Badge in RPL for staff continuing professional development and comprehensive resources for staff and learners, these outputs have supported a shared understanding of RPL in Ireland, enabling flexible access, lifelong learning, and sector-wide implementation of RPL.
