Defeating Adventism #224B—The End of Seventh-day Adventism and Their Annulled Sabbath (Ex. 20:11)
This video reviews some material already presented, but unpacks some concepts not addressed in previous videos. In this video, we discuss the two sets of stone tablets, the time gap between the shattering of the first set and the reception of the second set, including what was written and not written on the tablets. The results are devastating for Adventism: Seventh-day Adventist’s official publication, “Seventh-day Adventists Believe” states its official position on the sabbath recorded in Exodus 20:8-11. Namely, that the Sabbath is to be observed as a Memorial to Creation (p. 287). Herein lies the problem of gargantuan proportions for Seventh-day Adventists: When Moses shattered the first set of tablets at the foot of Mount Sinai (Ex. 32:19), the laws in Ex. 20:3-23:19 were annulled—which includes Seventh-Day Adventism’s foundational text—the Sabbath ordinance in Exodus 20:8-11. When Moses received the second set of tablets 40 days later (Deut. 9:18; 25), he was instructed to return to the top of Mt. Sinai and receive a new set of tablets (Deut. 10:1). God Himself told Moses that He would, “write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets” In other words, the second set would be identical to the first set of tablets. Yet Seventh-Day Adventists themselves acknowledge that the reason for commemorating the Sabbath in Exodus 20:11 and Deuteronomy 5:15 differ. And herein lies the dilemma for Adventists: • The Sabbath ordinance in Exodus 20:8-11 was annulled due to Israel's apostasy (Ex. 32:1-66) • God, who cannot lie, said that He would write the same words on the second set of tablets that were on the first set—this means that since the words in Deuteronomy 5:15 and Exodus 20:11 differ—these are words that God did not inscribe on both sets of tablets. The words that differ can only be viewed as Moses’ inspired exposition and application of the sabbath ordinance per se: “Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to EXPOUND this law, saying, (Deut. 1:5) And this is the problem of gargantuan proportions for Seventh-Day Adventists—a change in living conditions, entails a change in the application of the Law (the Law did not change)— Israel was no longer a nation wandering through a barren mountain wilderness with scarce water and limited vegetation. They were preparing to enter a land “flowing with milk and honey,” a settled agricultural society requiring different covenantal applications and social regulations. Consequently, the application of the Sabbath ordinance was changed within a new historical and covenantal context. Seventh-day Adventists nevertheless continue to observe the Sabbath according to Exodus 20:8–11. In doing so, they fail to recognize that the Deuteronomic formulation in Deuteronomy 5:12–15 erased the earlier wilderness application by reapplying the Sabbath ordinance within the context of Israel’s impending life in the Promised Land. The result is that this brings Seventh-Day Adventism to an end.
