Hunting is worse than captivity. And trap hunting requires checking traps regularly. When I set these traps, the ice was a couple of centimeters thick. I set them: one at the dam crossing, and the other at the crossing from the channel to the lake. When I set them, I knew a good frost of down to -25 degrees Celsius would hit for a couple of days. So I set them deep enough to keep them from freezing and to ensure they worked perfectly. The frost hit hard, and then a sudden gust of wind blew, so strong that I couldn't drive closer to the trap. I set off on foot. I got there quickly, grabbed a hatchet, and decided to start with the trap at the dam crossing. When I looked closer at the crossing, I noticed clear traces of hair frozen into the ice. I began breaking the ice to get to the trap. It's good that there wasn't much ice there, as there's a current. I fought him off a bit and immediately saw that I'd caught a decent-sized beaver. I took him out, wiped him with snow to remove excess water from his pelt. And with even greater enthusiasm, I headed to the second trap. I cut him free from the ice; there was much more frozen in here. The trap was closed and empty. But that didn't upset me one bit. I had one excellent beaver, and that was already very good. I gathered up the traps, the axe, and the catch. I tied a rope to the beaver for easy transport. I had a decent walk ahead. And then, with breaks, I slowly made my way home. The beaver was caught on the dam.
