The Awful F1 Exploits of Alex Yoong

Malaysia’s Alex Yoong is often regarded as one of the worst drivers in F1 history; one who regularly lagged behind his teammates and the rest of the grid. A man with nearly as many spins and bins as a certain Nikita MazeSPIN. One who suffered the infamy of failing to qualify for a grand prix on three occasions. But, as we’ve pondered with the likes of Jean-Denis Deletraz and Ricardo Rosset, is there more to the story? After all, this brief F1 career was situated at an underpowered, underfinanced backmarker, and pitted him against incredible talents in the same machinery, in rookies Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber. Surely anyone would look awful in that same situation… right? Today we’re deep diving into the story of Alex Yoong, from his junior series days all the way to the end of his F1 adventure, and seeing if we can’t piece together a defence to those who insist he truly belongs in the debate for F1’s Worst of all Time. Along the way we meet the likes of Paul Stoddart and the 107% Rule, read out the world’s greatest compliment from former F1 driver Satoru Nakajima, and there’s a brief glimpse of Eddy Burback’s pixelated feet.
