1980: Candid JILLY COOPER on CLASS and SEX | Five To One | Writers and Wordsmiths | BBC Archive

"You seem so nice, but some of your books are so savage. How do we know which is the real Jilly Cooper?" - Krysia Kobsiak. Five to One gives five young members of the public the opportunity to interview a guest of their choice, and to pose the kind of questions that professional interviews rarely ask. In this edition, journalist and author Jilly Cooper is quizzed by farmer Ian Crawford, police officer Susan Grimes, engineer David Harewood, journalist Krysia Kobsiak and disc jockey Dave Silver. Why do people read Jilly Cooper novels and articles? As taboos come tumbling down, is it getting harder to shock people? Is she, in reality, just as the tabloids would have people believe? What are her attitudes towards women's liberation? Her latest book, Class, is marketed as an expose of the British class system - but is she, a wealthy upper-class woman - really in a position to cast scorn on the working class? Does she feel responsible for her work? Is her writing a way to express things that she couldn't say in person? Many of the characters in her novels seem to follow classic archetypes - does she write to a formula? Does she have any desire to write on more serious topics? Clip taken from Five to One, originally broadcast on BBC Two, Tuesday 25 March, 1980.
