brainrot is the art of societal collapse🥀
In times of turmoil and chaos, when it's difficult to make sense of the world around us, as we watch society seem to rip apart at the seams. War, pandemic, environmental degradation, economic downturn and political turmoil. Life feels like a big joke, and we are the punchline. In the wake of all this uncertainty, we seek comfort in the absurd and nonsensical. Art becomes surreal, abstract and oftentimes meaningless. It speaks what cannot be spoken with words. And the modern world, that art is internet brainrot. It reflects the unique moment we live in today, in this society, and speaks to all of our challenges, hopes and fears. Most of this stuff is vapid nonsense, made for children or boomers on Facebook who can’t tell the difference between what is real and what is AI-generated slop. But keep an open mind here, the content created in the digital space tells us more about the world around us than we give it credit for. Much like Gutenberg’s printing press revolutionized the written word in 15th-century Europe, easy access to digital tools like Capcut, Canva, Davinci Resolve, Photoshop, and yes….AI, have made creating short-form video and imagery something almost anyone can do. With new tools and technology at our fingertips, we’ve been able to produce media at a scale not seen before. In this video, we discuss the phenomenon of "brainrot content" seen on apps like TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. At first glance, this content might seem like meaningless slop, but its absurdity and surreal nature has a long history, similar to the art of other chaotic and tumultuous times. Through the use of video and photo editing software, generative AI, video games and, text-to-speech voice cloning, content that some write off as slop has much more to say about the world we live in than meets the eye. There are strong stylistic and historical parallells tothe works of 15th century Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch to British illustrator Louis Wain and other art movements like Surrealism, Dadaism, Pop Art, and Punk music. Modern brainrot content is not only a symptom of societal collapse, but it is the surrealist art of our time. #brainrot #commentary #videoessay Subscribe to my channel here - / @citiesbydiana Support me on Patreon - / citiesbydiana Follow me on TikTok - / citiesbydiana Instagram - / citiesbydiana Threads - https://www.threads.net/@citiesbydiana Follow me on Twitch - / citiesbydiana Steam - https://steamcommunity.com/id/citiesb...
