The Haymarket Affair (often called the Haymarket Bomb Blast) is one of the most important events in the history of International Workers' Day, observed on May 1 each year. What happened? In the late 19th century, workers in the United States were fighting for better working conditions—especially an eight-hour workday. On May 1, 1886, massive strikes and demonstrations took place across the country, with Chicago as a major center of protest. On May 4, 1886, a peaceful rally was held at Haymarket Square in Chicago to support striking workers. As the protest was winding down, police moved in to disperse the crowd. At that moment, an unknown person threw a bomb at the police. The explosion and aftermath The bomb blast killed several police officers and civilians. Police responded by firing into the crowd, causing further casualties. The exact number of deaths is unclear, but the violence shocked the nation. Following the incident: Several labor activists were arrested, many with little or no evidence linking them directly to the bombing. A controversial trial led to the conviction of eight anarchist leaders. Four were executed, and others received long prison sentences. Why it matters in May Day history The Haymarket Affair became a symbol of workers’ struggle and sacrifice: It highlighted the tensions between labor movements and authorities. It exposed issues of justice as the trial was widely criticized as unfair. In 1889 an international socialist organization declared May 1 as International Workers' Day to honor the workers involved in the movement including those affected by the Haymarket incident. Legacy Today the Haymarket Bomb Blast is remembered as: A turning point in the global labor movement. A reminder of the fight for workers’ rights including fair hours and safe conditions. A key reason why May Day is celebrated worldwide as a day of labor solidarity.
