Bumblebees are fascinating and extremely important insects. They perform a large part of the necessary pollination for many of our flowering plants. Our fruit and vegetable gardens also depend on bumblebees for good yields. In their importance, they are in no way inferior to honeybees, their close relatives. Even in your own home garden, yields increase when there are healthy bumblebee populations. There are around 50 bumblebee species in German-speaking countries. Many of these can be greatly supported in the habitat of a home garden. Bumblebees need three things above all: the right (primarily native) nectar-producing plants, ideally distributed throughout the entire gardening year and in sufficient quantities a habitat that is as natural as possible for overwintering suitable locations to begin raising a new bumblebee colony (bumblebee nests) The good news: For the most part, all of these things can be provided quite well in a typical home garden. As more and more gardens, communities, and cities become bumblebee-friendly, life will become a bit easier for our bumblebees. The numerous changes in the management of our agricultural land and the rapid development of open or near-natural areas are robbing our bumblebees of both habitat and food sources. The widespread, regular application of pesticides and liquid manure exacerbates the already strained situation. Some species are now rarely found or have even disappeared altogether. Overall, the populations of almost all bumblebee species have declined sharply.
