SUPLEX - Banned Wrestling Technique!

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, During a wrestling match between American athlete Kennedy Blades and Romanian wrestler Cătălina Axente, Blades executed a powerful German Suplex that left Axente unable to continue, resulting in her being carried off the mat on a stretcher. This move, which looks straight out of WWE, raises the question: Was it legal? We look into the rules of Olympic wrestling, specifically Freestyle versus Folkstyle, to explain why this high-risk, high-amplitude throw was allowed in this context but is banned in many others. You’ll learn about the scoring system, the distinction between “grand amplitude” throws, and why such maneuvers are prohibited at lower levels of wrestling to protect younger athletes from serious injury.
