Circe was a sorceress who lived on the island of Aeaea. Her parents were Helios, the pre-Olympian Titan god of the sun, and the Oceanid Perseis. Her siblings were Perses, Aeetes, and Pasiphae. By using magic potions, Circe made her enemies forget their home and, with a wand, transformed those who offended her into animals (Odyssey, Book X, 229). She was famous for her knowledge of witchcraft, herbalism, and medicine. In the Odyssey, Circe's palace is described as a stone mansion that stood in the center of the island of Aeaea, amidst a valley and a clearing in a dense forest. Around the palace roamed lions and wolves, who were in reality merely the victims of her magic: they were harmless and flattered all strangers. Circe spent her time working at a large loom.
