Colgate Palmolive Company History Video (Meet the Colgate Toothpaste)
Today we discuss Colgate Palmolive company history. William Colgate launched his soap and candles business in New York City in 1806. The company went from candles to toothpaste, which it started making in 1873. By the time of Colgate's 100th birthday, there were about 200 different kinds of soap as well as 600 different fragrances. Colgate-Palmolive Peet was founded in 1898 as B.J. Johnson's Palmolive soap recipe. Most popular soap in the world at start of 20th century was Palmolive's, which included both palm and olive oils. Company chose its current name Colgate in 1953, and relocated its domestic and international operations headquarters to New York City. Colgate-Palmolive company came under increased pressure to expand beyond the detergent industry in the 1970s. David Foster implemented a strategy that prioritised internal development over acquisitions. Foster abruptly quit in 1979, citing poor health, after being pressured by a string of marketing flops. Colgate Palmolive company is on the list of the S&P500 and it was first added in 1957. Total was the top-selling brand of toothpaste in the United States a year after its launch. Colgate has a global presence as a manufacturer of consumer goods in more than 200 countries.
