It's unknown exactly how strong and refined the breathing technique was in the Sengoku era, but Moon Breathing began to be refined to its maximum when Michikatsu became an oni and changed his name to Kokushibou. Kokushibou refined his swordsmanship and fighting style as a demon, but until Yoriichi's death, his strength was ridiculously inferior to his brother's. Therefore, the now Upper Moon 1 spent 480 years refining his breathing style to the maximum, which earned him 16 forms of Moon Breathing.
