In this series about bishop endgames, you will learn how to play endgames with opposite and same colored bishops. These two types of endgames will be covered in detail based on practical examples which often appear in chess games. Not only will you learn different techniques and methods on how to win these endgames with bishops and pawns, but also techniques on how to hold a draw, like the so called “Fortress” in case you are down in material. In this video, IM Andrey Ostrovskiy will teach you the basic theory of same-colored bishop endgames. Summary: Basic method is to get rid of the enemy bishop or to get rid of the bishop from the diagonal, in order to exchange the bishops when it is a same colored bishop endgame so that you can simplify into a pawn endgame. When you try to exchange the bishops make sure you don’t blockade your own pawn from moving forward. Most important about this technique/ the basic thing you should remember: Finding the best square for your bishop to cover the diagonal or to kick your opponent’s bishop away. You have to combine kicking your opponent’s bishop away with winning time to promote your pawn. When the diagonal for that Bishop does not become so long, it is always useful to check if you can simply attack this bishop with the king. What if your opponent’s king is very close and active (= Active King)? This plays an important role and is very important - Basic drawish pattern!
