Whether bought ready-made at the gym or supermarket, or mixed yourself with protein powder and milk or water, a post-workout shake is a must for many of us. In recent decades, the good old food pyramid, which many of us remember from childhood, has been turned upside down. The base of bread and processed grain products is now proven to be a source of unnecessary carbohydrates, which can even be counterproductive if we want to lose body fat, because these foods contain many calories that are simply stored as fat. At the same time, the importance of protein has increased. The rule of thumb is that active athletes need about 1.5g of protein per kg of body weight, and very active athletes even 2g. For someone weighing approximately 60-80 kg, this equates to between 120 and 160g of protein daily. Do protein shakes damage my kidneys? No, as long as they are not overdone and/or there are no pre-existing conditions. Protein shakes alone are completely harmless to the kidneys and, apart from flavorings and a few other ingredients, essentially contain only what we would consume through food anyway. Protein with kidney damage – caution is advised! In cases of kidney damage, many doctors even recommend reducing protein intake to slow the progression of potential kidney failure. However, the body still depends on protein, especially the essential amino acids that it cannot produce itself. Therefore, you should carefully select the protein sources you use. Overall, you should still aim for 0.6 to 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, as protein is essential even for those with damaged kidneys. How can I find the right amount of protein? To determine whether you actually need the extra protein from shakes, simply look at your diet. If you eat plenty of meat or fish and also include plant-based sources like lentils, nuts, etc., you should be able to meet your protein needs through your diet alone. However, a protein shake is a good idea for many people, especially after exercise, because it often provides a good mix of different proteins at just the right time to support muscle function.
