California State Railroad Museum Steam Train

The California State Railroad Museum is considered by many to be one of the finest railroad museums in North America. Located along the Sacramento waterfront, this large indoor facility houses some of the most historically significant pieces of railroad rolling stock on the West Coast. The museum was incorporated in 1976, with the core collection being focused around equipment that had been gathered by the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society since the late 1930s. In 1981, the Museum of Railroad History building opened, giving the collection a permanent home in Old Sacramento. Since its initial founding the museum has managed to grow and expand its collection, with the acquisition of additional locomotives and rolling stock over the last four decades. Equipment dating back to the early 1860s shares spaces with more modern equipment at this unique destination in California’s capital. Most recently, equipment from the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, with Virginia & Truckee 4-4-0 18 “Dayton” and the Central Pacific Commissioner’s Car occupy track space inside the main facility. In 1984, regular train rides started being offered along the former Southern Pacific Walnut Grove Branch with the incorporation of the Sacramento Southern Railroad. Since 1997, the main locomotive for these trains along the Sacramento River has been Granite Rock Company 0-6-0T 10, originally built for the US Army by H. K. Porter in 1942. The tank engine is seen working the short roundtrip runs between Old Sacramento and Baths Siding.
