#SCOSoundbites – Zheng He – Admiral of the Seven Seas Concert: CONFLUENCE – SCO China Concert Tour 2024 Homecoming Concert Date: 6 Jul 2024 Composed by Law Wai Lun The year is 1405. Over 28 years, Zheng He sailed through more than 30 countries with his grand fleet of ships, and accomplished what other maritime explorers of his time have never done before. On the return trip of his 7th journey, Zheng He died from an illness. To commemorate the 600th anniversary of the great voyages of Zheng He, SCO commissioned a grand work that featured vocals, narration and orchestra, in an epic production for the Singapore Arts Festival opening show in 2005. This newly arranged version of The Admiral of Seven Seas - Zheng He, is a symphonic poem that condensed the essence from the original four-movement score, into a three-movement orchestration for the Chinese orchestra. The narration is told in flashbacks, starting from Zheng He’s sea burial, then flashed back to the start of his grand journey through the seas. • Movement I: Wandering Spirits First half of the movement depicts the sombre sea burial of Zheng He, while the second half of Movement I fictitiously portrays Zheng He’s wandering soul reminiscing his childhood in Yunnan, and his younger days when he served the Prince of Yan, Zhu Di. • Movement II: The Voyage Through different music themes and variations, the Voyage depicts the grand set-off of fleets of ships 600 years ago, at the Liu Family Harbour, in current day Suzhou. Zheng He’s fleet sailed passed and stopped by different countries in Southeast Asia during his voyage. • Movement III: Sea Destiny Zheng He not only boosted cultural and diplomatic exchanges between China and Southeast Asian countries. Legend has it, he also brought two lovebirds of different cultures together - the Melaka Sultan Mansur Shah and the Chinese Princess Han Li Bao. Movement III begins with the portrayal of marriage between the Sultan and Princess Han Li Bao, in rich and lively Southeast Asian style.
