All Service Ranks the Same
All Service Ranks the Same | 13th Sunday Ordinary Time Year A | Fr. Tochukwu Onyeagolu Do you ever feel that your contribution to the Kingdom of God is too small to matter? That because you are not a preacher, a bishop, or a renowned saint, God somehow sees your service as lesser? Today's Gospel has a word for you — and it may change the way you see yourself forever. In this homily for the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year A), Fr. Tochukwu Onyeagolu opens with a striking story about a wealthy man whose representative was humiliated at a fundraising event — with costly consequences. Drawing on Matthew 10:40–42, the Shunammite woman's hospitality in 2 Kings 4, and St Paul's baptismal theology in Romans 6, he makes the case that every act of welcome, every cup of cold water, every act of quiet service done in Christ's name carries the full weight of the Gospel. He also pauses for an honest personal examination: do we, as a Church, honour people differently based on their wealth? And what does God say to those who serve faithfully in the background, unseen and unacknowledged? The answer, drawn from William Barclay's commentary and the unforgettable story of a village cobbler, is both humbling and deeply consoling. As Robert Browning wrote: "All service ranks the same with God." In this homily you will hear: Why receiving God's messenger is the same as receiving God himself The four links in the chain of salvation A searching question for clergy and laity alike about wealth and honour The cobbler's request that moved a young preacher to tears A word of deep comfort for those who serve in the background Readings: Matthew 10:40–42 • 2 Kings 4:8–11, 14–16 • Romans 6:3–4, 8–11 Liturgical Season: Ordinary Time, Year A Feast: Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Subscribe for weekly Sunday homilies, feast day reflections, and resources for priests and faithful Catholics. 🔔 Turn on notifications so you never miss a new homily.
