Tindalos #64 - Lovecraft : Celui qui hante la nuit (1935). Livre audio
Translation: © François Bon Points Editions: 2017 ------- "The Haunter of the Dark" is Lovecraft's last short story. The story is well-known: Robert Bloch, barely eighteen years old, had published a short story ("The Visitor from the Stars") in Weird Tales featuring a character who bore a striking resemblance to Howard Phillips Lovecraft. As a game, Lovecraft then tells us the story of a certain "Robert Blake," sinisterly drawn to the Gothic spire of a church in Providence. A quid pro quo ensues between two writers who bring about each other's deaths in excruciating agony. The narrative is captivating, with a perfectly controlled progression. Of course, we find all the ingredients dear to Lovecraft: Providence as a backdrop (College Street, Brown University, the John Hay Library—precisely his own setting when he wrote in 1935), cursed books (those need no introduction!), scattered documents (official journals, wallet notes, Blake's journal), a foreign population weaving a whole web of beliefs (this was the Polish community in "The Witch House," see • Tindalos #59 - Lovecraft : La maison de la... ), the Thing in the Clock Tower—which obviously defies any concrete description (but how magnificent the text is then!). Classic Lovecraft, without a doubt. After this publication, Lovecraft's pen no longer tells stories. A lack of publishing opportunities and then cancer bring it to an end. For us, Lovecraft readers, it's heartbreaking. However, we still have the pleasure of preserving the essence of his work, by reading it for ourselves, by sharing it, by keeping it alive beyond the limits of time. “We are sailing on a sea, without maps, without reacting.” Let us sing if we can, and forget the rest...
