Written in a fast triple meter, the movement is built upon sharp, incisive rhythmic cells and sudden dynamic shifts, creating a sense of restless, stormy energy. Following a clear ternary structure, the opening section is dominated by a relentless staccato theme in A minor, which evolves into a sophisticated orchestral fugato. Directly inspired by the Scherzo of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this passage features a canonical entry of voices, with each instrumental section joining one by one to build a dense, overlapping web of counterpoint. This polyphonic development heightens the movement’s dramatic tension before giving way to a contrasting Trio in a brighter major key, where the orchestration becomes more transparent and pastoral. After a literal reprise of the Scherzo and its fugal elements, the movement concludes with a brilliant and decisive Coda, reaching a clear and definitive resolution that provides a sharp atmospheric break before the onset of the Finale.
