EXPLORING RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW | My Mulberry House

There is a certain silence in the garden that isn’t quiet at all. It hums. A soft, persistent rhythm just beneath things, the rustle of leaf against leaf, the breath of the soil warming under the sun, the pulse of bees moving from bloom to bloom. It is not dramatic, not seeking to be heard, but it is deeply alive. And it calls us back. To be in a garden is to remember that we are not separate from nature, no matter how cleverly we build our walls or how fast we move through our days. The garden has always been there, waiting with a steady kind of patience. You can come barefoot or burdened, hurried or hopeful. It makes no difference. The garden will meet you exactly where you are. There is something disarming about touching the earth. Hands in soil soften a person. You can’t rush planting. Seeds demand a kind of humility; they ask you to believe in something small and unseen. And so, in the act of tending to something outside ourselves, something shifts within. We become quieter. Gentler. Less interested in noise and more attuned to nuance. It is impossible to pull weeds without noticing the way the rain smells, or how the sun lays itself across your shoulders in the late afternoon. In time, the garden teaches you a new kind of time. One that isn’t measured in productivity or urgency, but in seasons. Cycles. A slow returning. This rhythm of patience, of care, begins to spill into other corners of your life. You speak more softly. You listen more deeply. You begin to notice things you had forgotten were worth noticing. When I think about how I came to do what I do now, I think of the garden. Not in the linear, tidy way we are taught to tell stories. But in roots. In compost. In a long, quiet apprenticeship to the land. What I do now, this weaving of life and home, of beauty and purpose, feels grown rather than chosen. As though everything I needed to learn was already there in the act of planting a row of beans or watching nasturtiums scramble up a fence. There is a freedom in the garden too. Not the wild, reckless kind, but something steadier. A freedom born of returning to what is real. In the garden, there is no performance. No filter. Just the truth of the moment. Mud on your knees. A robin nearby. Something just beginning to bud. It asks nothing more of you than your presence. And in return, it gives everything. So this is why we need gardens. Not only for the food or the flowers, though those are gifts too. But because a garden gently reminds us how to be human. To be connected. To be kind. It is not magic exactly. But it is something close. Some Links below are affiliate links. This means I receive a percentage of the revenue made from purchasing products through this link.
