Punakha Suspension Bridge is 1km away from Punakha Dzong. It will take about 15 minutes from Dzong. Cars are not allowed up to the bridge, Pleasant enough walk, It takes around 15 min to cross the whole bridge One of the oldest suspension bridges in the world, Punakha Suspension Bridge in Bhutan was believed to be built by the Buddhist Monk Thangtong Gyalpo . This bridge is built above Po Chhu River. (Male River ) The bridge connects the dzong with the villages on the other bank of the Po Chhu river. Punakha Dzong Suspension Bridge is an important part of the architectural history of Bhutan, which connects the villages of Shengana, Samdingkha and Wangkha. This 160 metres suspension bridge is the longest in Bhutan. This bridge relies on cables anchored to massive cement blocks on the banks. The bridge does have some inbuilt flexibility that makes it swing in strong winds, This is due to the stabilizing cables that taper off on both ends of the bridge.The deck is made of solid planks of wood nested in the deck truss. This bridge provides a good view of the river and valley with the mountain as background. The real adventure is walking across the bridge, as there isn’t anything interesting across the other side of the bridge. Pleasant enough walk, It takes around 15 min to cross the whole bridge Best time to visit Punakha Suspension Bridge. Tourists can visit Punakha Suspension Bridge throughout the year. But March to May and October to November. It is better to avoid this valley in the rainy season as flash floods are a common sight here. Best time is after 4PM or early as the weather is generally hot. It is very difficult to walk especially under the hot sun. Charges are 300 per person which include Punakha Dzong + Suspension Bridge Draped with prayer flags and mountains surrounding from all sides surely makes for a breath-taking view. Do not throw garbage into the river. If you are afraid of height, this may scare you as it sways a bit due to the strong winds from the flowing river beneath. Its becomes narrow and swings a little when you are right in the middle and there is no way out but to continue or fall back. Walk to the very end of bridge. There is a small shop at other end where you can enjoy momos,icecreams or much more Views of the river and surrounds are lovely. Villagers selling local cucumber and guava Gooseberry sit at the end of both bridge. River rafting is a major attraction in Punakha. Experienced rafters are on board for the safety of the first timers. Fees :Rs. 2000/person. Main location is Pochu River Bank. Best time is October to May. Timing 8.00am to 5.00pm.
