There are some elementary school abacus students in the prefecture with incredible brains who are ready to compete in the national tournament! The All-Japan Abacus Championship, which determines the pinnacle of the abacus world, is held once a year on August 8th, named after the "crackling" sound of an abacus. Participants must hold ranks in the abacus and mental arithmetic tests, and this year a record 731 people, ranging in age from 6 to 75, will be competing. The other day, athletes competing in the national and prefectural tournaments gathered at an abacus school in Izumi City for intensive practice. Confidently operating the abacus in the front row among adults and junior high school students is the tournament's youngest contestant, Ayaka Tamaki (6 years old). She began learning the abacus at the age of 3, and in just three years she achieved a semi-fourth-level rank in the abacus test and a seventh-level rank in the mental arithmetic test. He practices six times a week, for up to two hours a day, and will compete in the national tournament for the first time in 2024! This year, he will be the youngest competitor in the tournament, and his goal is to surpass last year's performance. The tournament is divided into an individual all-around competition, which tests overall ability in abacus and mental arithmetic, individual events such as flash mental arithmetic, and a prefectural competition. There are two super elementary school students in the prefecture who are aiming to be ranked within the top 100 in the national individual all-around competition. Kumanda Souta and Yuta are twin sixth-graders. Both hold the highest ranks of 10th dan in abacus and 10th dan in mental arithmetic. By the way, Souta achieved the highest rank in abacus first, and Yuta the highest rank in mental arithmetic first. They started attending abacus classes in the summer of their first year of elementary school, practicing three to four hours a day, and have been competing in national tournaments since they were in the third grade. These twins are not just amazing at abacus!? They also competed in the national soft tennis doubles tournament as prefectural representatives. They were featured in the "Athletes in the Raw" segment of News Plus Oyatt last year. They also study swimming, soccer, and karate together. Their goal at the national tournament on August 8th is to place in the top 100. A total of 17 people from Kagoshima will be competing in the All Japan Abacus Championship, with a record 731 competitors.
