The Gods of the First Mesopotamian Civilization When we think of the world's first civilization, "Mesopotamian Civilization," images from world history textbooks likely conjure up in our minds: Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization, with the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers providing life, houses built from bundles of reeds, towering ziggurats and the Tower of Babel reaching to the heavens, cuneiform, the world's first writing system, and Hammurabi's Laws, the chronicles of the civilization's greatness. Thousands of years have passed, and humanity has shifted its focus to occupying various lands. Buildings rival those of the ziggurats, while cement buildings in cities are taller than the Tower of Babel. The subsequent change is the spirituality of the people, who are moving away from myths and seeking stability in life, reaching for the heavens. Mesopotamia once worshipped many gods. They built a towering ziggurat to send messages to the gods. Today, they have only one god residing in the soul of modern society. THE GODS OF EARLY MESOPOTAMIA Upon mentioning Mesopotamia, one of the world’s first civilizations, old images from world history textbooks emerge on the “screen of the mind.” Mesopotamia is situated within the Tigris-Euphrates river system. It’s a civilization known for architectural structures built exclusively with reeds as its iconic design, as well as the massive ziggurat and the Tower of Babel, which is “an origin myth” featuring a tower with its top in the sky. Writing emerged in the form of “cuneiform records.” There is also the Code of Hammurabi, a Babylonian legal text considered to be the best-preserved of its kind from the ancient Near East. Thousands of years have sailed past. Different lands have fallen under the rulership of alternating groups of humanity. We Now, there are architectural structures that rise as high as the ziggurat, and cement buildings that rise even higher than the Tower of Babel. “The spirit of humanity” has also transformed with the times, as people are now conducting their lives in ways that are becoming “further removed…from the legends.” People are seeking what they perceive to be “a sense of security,” much more so than “elevating their souls…to touch the heavens.” Mesopotamia was once “a land of…many gods.” Ziggurats were built to serve as channels “delivering messages…to those gods.” But in today’s modern society, the people here only have “one god”…in their hearts.
