Etchmiadzin - the oldest cathedral in the world
Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat) is the 4th-largest city in Armenia (former capital of ancient Greater Armenia) and the most populous municipal community of Armavir Province, located about 18 km (11 mi) west of the capital Yerevan, and 10 km (6 mi) north of the closed Turkish-Armenian border. The city is best known as the location of Etchmiadzin Cathedral. Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church, located in Armenia. According to scholars it was the first cathedral built in ancient Armenia (303 - 484 AD) and is considered the oldest cathedral in the world. Along with several important early medieval churches located nearby, the cathedral was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
