Tortosa is a city and municipality in Catalunya, capital of the Baix Ebre region. It is also the seat of the diocese of Tortosa and is an important agricultural, commercial and industrial center. Tortosa is located at 12 metres (39 feet) above sea level, by the Ebro River, protected on its northern side by the mountains of the Cardó Massif, of which Buinaca, one of the highest peaks, is located within Tortosa's municipal boundary. Tortosa was possibly the city of Hibera, capital of the Iberian territory of Ilercavonia. It is very likely that the main settlement was on the hill that currently occupies the Castillo de la Suda. It was Dertosa under the Roman Empire, occupied in 714 by the Muslims. The economy of the municipality is based on the commercial and service activity in the city, at the same time as an industrial sector located in the Bajo Ebro industrial estate, the South Catalonia industrial estate (called to be the regional economic engine) and the Polygon of the Station next to that of Ravaleta de Roquetes. Another of its activities is the agricultural sector. Dertosa is the name of a city of Roman Hispania that corresponds to the present city of Tortosa. The town preserves an important epigraphic collection (many of its inscriptions were recorded by Emil Hübner and collected in the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum II) and archaeological remains such as granite columns, which can be seen in this episode.
