Budapest is the well-known capital of the operetta, after Vienna. Recently The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre functions as a musical theatre with two divisions: Hungarian operettas and their modern descendants, that is contemporary Hungarian musicals on the one hand, and musicals based on literary or historical topics aimed at a younger generation on the other. In recent years, more than five hundred shows, in front of audiences of four hundred thousand people are performed here annually. The audience of the theatre experience high quality of works from wide-ranging genre that are represented here. The Budapest Operetta And Musical Theatre is popular for hosting famous operetta composers like Emmerich Kálmán, Franz Lehár, Ábrahám Paul, Jenő Huszka, and works of their today’s followers, the successful music composers Claude-Michel Schönberg, Gerard Presgurvic, Sylvester Lévay. The creative brains of the theatre arrange one co-production after another with partner theatres all around the world and the company is regularly on tour, performing in numerous countries and cities all across Europe and Asia. In 2013, The Budapest Operetta And Musical Theatre became the ‘Hungaricum’ and well deservedly earned its title of one of the National Treasures of Hungary.
