▶ Are you familiar with the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)? December 17, 2011. The test center for the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOPIK). With over 65,000 test takers, the largest number ever, taking the test, thorough body searches are a given to prevent any potential cheating! No personal belongings are allowed inside the test center. They have 70 minutes to answer 50 listening and reading questions, and only those who score at least 80 out of 200 are eligible to go to Korea. With a single question potentially changing their fate, test takers can't put their pens down. ▶ Study, study, study... Driving on the streets, ironing in factories... Even working 12 hours a day, their monthly wages are barely enough to cover living expenses. They're too young to blame their poverty! The only way out is to pass the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOPIK) and go to Korea. This desperation is fueling their studies. In Phnom Penh, Cambodia, there are over 30 Korean language schools specializing solely in the Korean language. Students who come to the city from the countryside live in dormitories and focus solely on their studies... while those preparing for the college entrance exam face hardships, striving for the Korean dream. ▶ Farewells at the Airport At Phnom Penh Airport in Cambodia, special individuals prepare to say goodbye. The lucky ones who passed the Korean Language Proficiency Test and proudly secured their tickets to the Korean Dream! It's a moment they've longed for, but tears still flow as they face the prospect of parting with their families. These individuals, standing at the starting line of their Korean dream, board a plane bound for Korea, a land of unfamiliarity but also a land of opportunity. ▶ Those Who Achieved the Korean Dream These individuals, who worked hard as laborers in Korea and saved money, have achieved a life-changing turnaround. The first is Van Suong. He sent 85% of his wages back home. He built a new home for his parents, and his sisters, with the money Van sent, studied, married, and became university professors. The second protagonist is Nguyen Van Lam, a living legend in Vietnam.
