Fountain Pen Drawing | 10 Minute Tuesday – Water-Soluble Ink Sketch of a Rainy Park Scene
Welcome back to another 10 Minute Tuesday! In today’s session, I’m revisiting one of my first artistic loves — fountain pen drawing with water-soluble ink. This week’s challenge is all about looseness, spontaneity, and letting the ink flow. We’ll be sketching a couple walking in the park in the rain, using a dip pen and Earl Grey ink, which beautifully separates into multiple tones when it meets water. It’s a quick, expressive exercise that combines ink drawing and simple watercolor techniques for an atmospheric result. Unlike watercolor, fountain pen ink behaves unpredictably — it blooms, bleeds, and surprises you. That’s the fun! In this tutorial, I’ll demonstrate how to: Draw with a dip pen for expressive, varied linework Embrace imperfection and spontaneity in your sketches Use water-soluble fountain pen ink to create soft washes and rain effects Paint light and shadow using nothing but diluted ink Add texture, splashes, and contrast for an emotional, moody scene ⏱️ Chapters: 00:00 – Introduction & overview 00:35 – Materials: fountain pen, ink & paper 01:10 – Setting up the 10 Minute Tuesday challenge 02:00 – Starting the fountain pen sketch 03:45 – Building loose linework and composition 05:10 – Adding water for ink wash effects 06:30 – Creating the rainy park atmosphere 08:00 – Highlights, details & finishing touches 09:15 – Reflections, tips & closing thoughts 🖋️ Materials Used: Dip pen (or fountain pen with flex nib) Water-soluble fountain pen ink (Earl Grey or similar) Water brush or round brush Mixed-media or watercolor paper 💡 Tip: 99% of standard fountain pen inks are water-soluble — you don’t need anything fancy. Avoid waterproof inks like Platinum Carbon Black if you want those soft, blended washes. So grab your pen, set a timer, and join me for another relaxed 10 Minute Tuesday fountain pen drawing. Be bold, make mistakes, and enjoy the process — because that’s where the real creativity lives. #fountainpendrawing #watercolorandink #inkandwash #dippenart #urbansketching #arttutorial *Deep Deep Light 10% discount by using the discount code: deepjoy* It would be great to get your thoughts on the video!
