Gabriele Finaldi on The Golden Age of Spain in the National Gallery
A world-renowned expert on 17th-century Spanish art, Gabriele Finaldi studied at London’s prestigious Courtauld Institute where he wrote his dissertation on the important Spanish Baroque painter Jusepe de Ribera, whose work is featured in the exhibition. Prior to his current appointment at the National Gallery, Finaldi was Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. He has curated exhibitions in Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the US, and he has written catalogues and scholarly articles on Ribera, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Italian Baroque painting, and religious iconography. Finaldi’s talk is the closing installment of the Museum’s 2018–19 Docent-sponsored Guest Lecture Series. This lecture is presented in connection with the exhibition "Art and Empire: The Golden Age of Spain." This lecture is presented as a part of the Guest Lecture & Tour series, which focuses on works of art on view in the Museum as well as topics of interest in the broader art world. Lectures are followed by docent-led tours. Sponsored by The San Diego Museum of Art Docent Council www.SDMArt.org
