Day 3 is also the day we head home, but I can promise you, the article about Pechmann's Old Oil Mill is absolutely fantastic. You're sure to find one or two interesting exhibits among this massive collection of curiosities. My insight into Herbert's (the owner of the oil mill) upended life now allows me to assert: the faster the progress, the more paths lead back to the future. The next stop on our journey, so to speak, is the Weizklamm. That very water-filled gorge in the eastern Graz mountains. In 1879, this crucial road was ceremoniously opened here after 1.5 years of construction. The 14km road cost 96,000 guilders, of which approximately 53,000 went towards the 2.4km gorge section. Since then, this newly created breakthrough valley has formed an economic transport axis that remains vital for the entire region to this day. Due to its location in the gorge, the road is particularly vulnerable to rockfall and requires regular maintenance. It wasn't until 2008 that this important commuter route made headlines again. Storm Paula caused significant damage in some areas and necessitated a three-month cleanup phase. The resulting total closure directly affected 15,000 people in the Passail area. This very traffic disruption reignited the discussion about building a road tunnel. There were no technical concerns about this. The required 2 km long tunnel was scheduled to be completed in about two and a half years. The resulting delay in the pending environmental impact assessment and the threat of not being able to meet the estimated €45 million funding target resulted in the project being scrapped. There are more than 100 caves around the Weizklamm Gorge, only a few of which are easily accessible. Therefore, there are no so-called show caves. Most of the cavities provide vital habitat for up to 11 different species of bats and, due to their sensitivity to the natural environment, should not be entered.
