Directed by Edwin, this film feels like an elevated horror film that prioritizes atmosphere, psychology, and thematic exploration over relying solely on jump scares. The story follows Putri (Rachel Amanda), who investigates the mysterious death of her mother at a hair factory called PT Raga Abadi. The deeper the investigation, the more irregularities are revealed, including the fact that workers were forced to work overtime, leading to workplace accidents. This film blends mystery, horror, social satire, and retro B-movie absurdity. The characters are colorful, from Maryati, played by Didik Nini Thowok, to Ida (Lutesha) and Bona (Iqbaal Ramadhan), eccentric figures with extraordinary, unique abilities. Beneath its over-the-top B-movie approach, the film holds a sharp critique of the failure of a system that sacrifices people for the benefit of those in power. Edwin doesn't simply blame individuals, but questions the system itself. Coupled with a dull visual aesthetic that heightens the sense of unease, the use of well-crafted practical effects, and Sal Priadi's song "Kepala, Pundak, Kerja Lagi" (Head, Shoulders, Work Again), which feels like an anthem for the workers, Monster Pabrik Rambut successfully proves that Indonesian horror can still be fresh, intelligent, and worth reflecting on.
