Hamsi fishing continues from September, when autumn begins, until March or April of the following year. Around this time, ports near Istanbul bustle with fishing boats preparing to set out for the hamsi season. A fishing boat has been engaged in hamsi fishing for three months since last September. It set sail toward the Black Sea, but faced a situation where it was difficult to proceed further due to ominous weather. The sea was battered by strong winds and rain. Taking advantage of a brief lull in the rain, they attempted to fish... When hamsi fishing is conducted, two boats work together. When a school of hamsi is spotted, the smaller boat spreads a circular net over the water; once the school is herded into the net, a crane mounted on the main vessel lifts the net. It is said that fishing in this manner offers the advantage of catching a large quantity of fish at once. The crew members repeatedly lower and raise their nets. Having been stranded in port for several days due to the weather, they pour even more effort into their work. Eventually, the fishing boat fills up to capacity in just one night.
