As a teenager, he worked in his father's workshop in Orillia, Ont., As a horse-drawn car decorator. The volutes allow him to develop his talents as a designer, draftsman and colorist. In 1911, his interest in art took him to Toronto, where he attended Central Technical School and the Ontario College of Art. Although he draws on the motif in many parts of Ontario, including Georgian Bay and the north shore of Lake Superior, it is La Cloche, where the family cottage is located, that remains his favorite spot. Best known as a watercolor artist, Camichael was the youngest of the founding members of the Group of Seven.
