Reno 2023 National Championship Air Races Saturday 16 Sep 2023 Unlimiteds, Bardahl Special, P-63

It's Saturday at Reno and the crowds are here. Some nostalgic laps are made by the restored 1940s P-51 racer Thunderbird, as well as Clay Lacy's famous purple Mustang, flown by Vicky Benzing. Bob Hoover's instantly recognizable yellow P-51 pace and aerobatic plane went aloft for a missing man formation. We endeavor to give you different vantage points during the days of the races, to immerse yourself in the action. So if you couldn't make it to Reno for the final air races there, sit back and enjoy the action with us. We captured a T-6 Texan drag race in which only two aircraft take off side by side and fly one lap around the course to determine the winner. The race officially starts as the aircraft pass the home pylon on takeoff, and ends one lap later. And we caught several categories of traditional races as well. In the afternoon as cloud cover moved overhead, the last event was Unlimited Heat 3A was taken by Steven Hinton in the all-white Bardahl Special P-51D Mustang at a speed of 405.292, while his competition all posted speeds under 400. The following day, experienced T-6 racing pilots Nick Macy and Chris Rushing died in a collision following the T-6 Gold Race. We express our condolences to their families and friends.
