From breeding sows to "Beter Leven" broiler chicken farming based on the Dutch model. The Timmerhuis family farm in Wilsum is steeped in tradition and, after phasing out sow farming, has reoriented itself with a modern broiler chicken barn that went into operation in 2025. Bastian Timmerhuis explains why the family opted for the Beter Leven concept and what the advantages are for the farm and the animals. Compared to conventional housing level 2 in Germany, Beter Leven means more space for the animals, exposure to the outdoors through a winter garden, and a system in which all animals are housed and removed simultaneously – a significant advantage for workflow and animal health, some of which are also found in housing level 3 in Germany. The chickens have access to enrichment materials and receive additional wheat kernels daily. The covered winter garden is particularly popular during the warmer months, and the animals can use it throughout the day, depending on the temperature. The transition to broiler chicken farming went smoothly, the workload is manageable – and it integrates easily into everyday life, Bastian explains, describing his work with the broilers.
