This memorandum of understanding included a fourteen point checklist of conditions (with none of them being particularly favourable to average Americans) BUT the one that stood out the most was an allocation for at LEAST three hundred billion dollars to be paid by the US and its regional partners for the reconstruction of Iran. Now assuming that our unnamed “regional partners” can’t be convinced to pay for our mistakes, this would work out to almost $2,000 for every current American taxpayer, which has a lot of people raising a lot of very valid questions, chief amongst which is… Where could all of this money possibly be going? For context, the Marshall Plan, that rebuilt the entirety of Western Europe after the second world war, cost America around… $150 billion dollars when adjusted for inflation. Back then that was enough money to restore the economies of 16 countries after 6 years of the most devastating war in human history… today we are supposedly going to be putting up twice that that amont… to a single country… after less than 6 months… of what was “technically” never a war to begin with. Additionally, unlike the Marshall Plan, Iran is unlikely to become an ally, raising other questions about the less savory operations that this money might end up financing… It sounds bad… but to be fair the big flashy headlines have (either maliciously or incompetently) misguided most people on where this money is coming from, and where it is actually going… If you take the time to do this… and understand the actual mechanics of this plan… it actually… just ends up making the whole thing look even dumber than it already sounds...
