Fr. Michael M. Fr. Michael M. Gauvreau, FI reflects on the heroic witness of St. Charles Lwanga and his companion martyrs of Uganda. Drawing a parallel to the Old Testament martyrs in the Maccabees and the warnings of Psalm 36:1 regarding the malice of sinners, he highlights how God provides supernatural strength to those who remain faithful under persecution. In 1879, Catholic missionaries entered Uganda, eventually converting many, including the king's pages. When the young King Mwanga demanded impure acts from these boys, Joseph and later St. Charles Lwanga protected them. This triggered a brutal persecution. Despite horrific tortures during a 17-mile march to their execution, none of the young men renounced their faith. St. Charles even helped prepare his own execution pyre, demonstrating that while persecutors can kill the body, they cannot kill the soul. Their sacrifice became the seedbed of Christianity, leading to millions of conversions. Sharing personal encounters with hostility and bullying from his youth, Fr. Gauvreau warns that evil remains active in modern society. He explains that the law of God is written on every human heart, as noted in Romans 2:15, leaving the wicked without excuse. He challenges the faithful to be prepared for spiritual and physical trials, urging them to pray for the grace to stand firm.
