First Reading – 2 Kings 2:1, 6-14 The Lord takes Elijah up to heaven in a chariot of fire. Elisha asks for a “double portion” of Elijah’s spirit. Elijah says if Elisha sees him go, the request is granted. Elisha sees it, picks up Elijah’s mantle, strikes the Jordan, and the waters part. Theme: God’s spirit and mission continue beyond one person. Discipleship means receiving and carrying it forward. Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 31:20, 21, 24; R/. Let your hearts be stout, all you who hope in the Lord. “Your goodness is great, O Lord… You hide them in the shelter of your presence.” A prayer of trust in God’s protection. Gospel Acclamation – John 14:23 Alleluia, alleluia. Whoever loves me will keep my word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him and we will come to him Gospel – Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 Jesus teaches on true righteousness: “Beware of practicing your piety before others… When you give alms, pray, or fast, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing… Your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Faith is lived for God, not for human approval. Secret devotion brings public reward.Central message of the day: God passes His mission from one generation to the next.
