How to record a Trumpet (Questionable techniques included!)

You’ll often hear advice like “Don’t record directly in front of the bell” or “Don’t record from the side!”. The truth is, each position produces a very different sound, and those differences can drastically affect the final result. Depending on the context, the “wrong” placement might actually give you the exact sound you’re looking for. That’s why it’s important to know how each approach sounds. To demonstrate, we’ve chosen a soft passage and tried out different recording techniques. You can adapt these ideas depending on your needs. Rather than leaving you with dry trumpet recordings, I wanted to give you some musical context. So, I first play with a backing track and reverb, then repeat the same takes without backing or reverb, and finally reintroduce both. This way, you’ll hear how each placement works on its own and in context. Also, this isn’t a mic shootout video; I happened to have four microphones available and used them all as a bonus. The se8s are positioned correctly. So, make sure your mic placement is on point.
