In January 2012, Senator Gregorio De Falco served as head of the Livorno Port Authority's operations section. In that capacity, he coordinated the rescue efforts for the Costa Concordia, the cruise ship that crashed into the rocks off the island of Giglio on January 13, ten years ago. His telephone communications with the ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, remain a symbol of that tragedy, in which 32 people lost their lives.
