KTM fired a missile at the R1200GS. The collateral damage is significant, particularly to the Ducati Multistrada Enduro. The sticker says 1290 Super Adventure R. As you can see, it's powered by the fabulous LC-8 V-twin. Rumor has it that this engine won the Dakar in 2002 and was also used in the RC-8, a racing sportbike. Well, that's how it works out, because for KTM, all roads lead to the LC-8, it's just different every time. This time, like the Super Duke, the bore and stroke are 1301 cc, and it produces 140 Newtons of torque and 160 horsepower. There's nothing more powerful on Earth with 21 front wheels today. Mother of Hercules, this thing is fucking nuts! Someone, someone. It's not just paving the way for KTM, it's devouring it! Please, leave it alone! 160 horses don't move the earth. They rotate the earth. Let's take a step back and see what we're looking at. At first glance, you can tell that the frame and engine are from the old 1290, now renamed the Super Adventure Touring. But the tank and wheel sizes are from the 1190R, and it's a pure adventure bike. The headlight is absolutely out of this world. The LEDs are so powerful that they have their own heatsink. To cool the bulbs, the headlight is split in two by a heat sink. The spoked and tubeless wheels are reinforced because the front ones from the old 1190 would fold over at the mere sight of a bump. I can already see 1190 owners buying these and installing them. The most obvious upgrade is the huge smartphone on the dashboard. It's 6.5-inch gorilla glass; it won't scratch even if the bike takes a little beating. And despite what the corrupt journalists say, it reflects just as it should. And it's entirely possible to hit a shiny new iPad with a rock, just by dropping the bike at the right angle. Is it just me, or is the bike alive? It senses when the key is within a meter and a half and prepares for a race or a drink. It monitors tire pressure and maintains racer speed. The 1290 can even climb a mountain on its own, but only if you give it a gift. And if you buy the $600 touring electronics package, you'll also get a phone connection, which... Hi, Ryan. You humans are fragile creatures. Let's start with a paved road, at least you'll stop screaming like a baby. The 1290's power curve is amazingly smooth. It pulls well, predictably lifts the front end at 5,000 rpm, and continues to pull all the way to its peak power at 9,000 rpm. It quiets down a bit before the 10,000 rpm redline, so unless you're trying hard, you won't hit the redline. The only drawback is the wooden seat. It's comfortable to shift weight back and forth on dirt, but with 160 horsepower in Sport mode, you feel like you're just cruising along. The quickshifter comes with the optional electronics package; you can flip up and forget about the clutch. And it's a good thing it's dual-sided, because mashing the pedal down is more enjoyable than mashing those Brembos. But why? Because their grip is rather weak. And the feedback isn't exactly encyclopedic. But the handling is incredibly sharp. On asphalt, with a 21-inch front wheel, I've never felt such good handling. Thanks to the stiffer springs, dive is less than the 1190, and thanks to the Bosch cornering ABS, you can yank the brake lever mid-corner without losing front traction or straightening the bike. Honestly, I'm worried about forgetting how to brake. Both pressing the front brake pedal and distributing the force between the front and rear. But people are so weak, and... Yes, yes. Just like buses and tanks, the KTM 1290 is narrower than the Big Goose. Logic dictates that the Goose is lighter on the transitions, and I think that's true, but from this position the Super Adventure feels sportier because it's smaller.
