But the brand, and the proud French car industry, lacked a prestige model in the upper segment. Development of a more exclusive version of the DS began in the early 1960s under the name Project S. This evolved into a majestic four-seater coupé. When Citroën subsequently acquired Maserati in 1968, everything fell into place. The spirited Italians created an aluminum 2.7-liter V6 that was installed in the nose of a Grand Tourisme designed by Robert Opron. Naturally, it moved gracefully on Citroën's hydropneumatic suspension system. Production began in 1970, and the first two years were a success. World stars like Johan Cruyff drove the SM, among others. But soon, stories about its unreliability and expensive maintenance began to deter customers. The oil crisis followed in 1973, a year later Citroën was bankrupt, and in 1975, the new owner, Peugeot, ceased production. The Concorde for those with a fear of heights had flown the cobwebs.
