Notable Trees of the African Bush E11: Afzelia quanzensis/Mukamba/Pod Mahogany
With their striking red and black seeds and their chunky wooden pods, the Mukamba trees (Pod Mahogany) are a stand out feature of the woodlands of southern Africa. Pod Mahoganies are highly prized for their medicinal and magical uses, as well as their beautiful hardwood timber. The sight of a fully grown tree, with its pods splitting open to reveal the creamy white pith and the scarlet seed aril, is always impressive. This specimen, in the remote southern reaches of Chizarira National Park, jumped out at me when I saw it and so, obviously, I had to share it with you!
