There's no indoor plumbing because pipes explode in the permafrost, so everyone uses outdoor outhouses in −60° cold. Cars are left running 24 hours a day from autumn until spring, because the fluids freeze solid if you stop the engine. People survive on frozen raw fish and horse liver because nothing grows in the ground that's frozen a thousand meters deep. Even burying the dead takes three days of bonfires just to thaw enough earth to dig. So why does anyone live here? The answer is dark: the town sits at the end of the "Road of Bones," a 2,000-km highway Stalin forced Gulag prisoners to build through the ice — where, by some estimates, a person died for nearly every meter, their remains buried beneath the road itself. The people left behind stayed, adapted, and turned one of the most hostile places on the planet into a fiercely proud home.
