Inside the Coldest Town on Earth People Still Call Home

Have you ever been so cold that your eyelashes froze solid in three seconds? Welcome to Oymyakon — the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth, home to about 500 people, where winter temperatures regularly drop to −58°F and the record low hit an almost unimaginable −96°F (−71.2°C). Parts of Mars are warmer than this town. And this isn't a research station or a military base. It's a real town with kids, schools, and jobs — a place where ink freezes inside your pen, your phone dies in minutes, and touching a metal door handle can strip the skin from your palm. There's no indoor plumbing because pipes explode in the permafrost, so everyone uses outdoor outhouses in −60° cold. Cars are left running 24 hours a day from autumn until spring, because the fluids freeze solid if you stop the engine. People survive on frozen raw fish and horse liver because nothing grows in the ground that's frozen a thousand meters deep. Even burying the dead takes three days of bonfires just to thaw enough earth to dig. So why does anyone live here? The answer is dark: the town sits at the end of the "Road of Bones," a 2,000-km highway Stalin forced Gulag prisoners to build through the ice — where, by some estimates, a person died for nearly every meter, their remains buried beneath the road itself. The people left behind stayed, adapted, and turned one of the most hostile places on the planet into a fiercely proud home. But now the ground itself is betraying them: as the Arctic warms, the permafrost is thawing, foundations are sinking into mud, and the young face an agonizing choice — stay, or drive down the Road of Bones and never look back. If you were born in the coldest town on Earth, would you stay? Drop a comment below.
