We're heading off the beaten path to discover the city's industrial heartland — the neighbourhoods where generations of workers lived, laboured, and helped shape modern Norway. These places may not appear on every tourist itinerary, but they tell some of the most fascinating stories the city has to offer. Like in many European cities, industry once grew along the river that powered it. In Oslo, that river was the Akerselva. Its waterfalls and currents drove factories, mills, and workshops that transformed the city during the Industrial Revolution. Around them grew entire working-class communities, each with its own identity, traditions, and character. Today, many of those factories have been reborn as cultural institutions, schools, galleries, and creative spaces. The workers may be gone, but the spirit of these neighbourhoods remains very much alive. On this walk, we'll discover the beautiful Vøyenfallene waterfalls, visit the historic Hjula Væveri textile mill, explore the preserved workers' quarter and its museum and stop by the charming Vøyenvolden Farm. We'll see Rivertzkes Kvartal, one of Oslo's earliest residential developments built for workers and visit the impressive Sagene Church. We'll continue through the green surroundings of Iladalen, stroll along the postcard-perfect streets of Damstredet and Telthusbakken and visit the ancient Aker Church — the oldest surviving building in Oslo, along the way, we'll also see how the city's industrial heritage has found new life.
