This is done using a #backup solution or a #DR solution, where you can configure a policy such as retention period, or backup frequency, or recovery time objective (RTO) or RPO (recovery point objective). While the use of a dedicated backup or DR solution is very useful and helpful, you still have a lot of tools in #Google Cloud Platform and in #Compute_Engine (#GCE). One of these tools is Persistent Disks #Snapshots. Snapshots in GCP is one of the most essential tools that any GCP #admin or engineer would need to use all the time for any scenario. This is your most basic, easiest, and cheapest backup solution for GCP workloads and VMs in Compute Engine. You have two options to configure snapshots for your VMs in GCP. You can either do it manually by creating a snapshot for a disk in Compute Engine, or you can create a snapshot schedule, then assign disks to this schedule. Using a snapshot schedule will allow you to #automate the snapshots creation, ensuring you have a guaranteed recovery point in case something goes wrong. You will have the ability and the options to configure the frequency, and the retention of the snapshots schedule. For me personally, I would always create a ‘default’ snapshots schedule for any customer or organization or VM I work with. This makes sure that I have a recovery point in case something goes wrong during whatever activity or deployment I’m doing. I would configure a 14 days retention snapshots schedule with 1 snapshot everyday out of production hours. In your case you may want to change the frequency, or reduce the retention, or even make it an hourly snapshot schedule that only retains the snapshots for 1 or 2 days, which can serve as a quick and short recovery point for you. GCP is very flexible and you can do a lot of setups and configurations in GCP!
