Receta Guaguas de Pan

“Guagua,” meaning child or baby in the Quichua language, is the reason why guagua bread has that shape. It plays a central role, along with colada morada (a purple corn and fruit drink), in the Day of the Dead celebrations or Holy Week in Ecuador, and is represented as a symbolic element of alliances and social commitments. These celebrations take place on November 2nd, All Souls' Day. Guagua bread figures are usually made of wheat flour, filled with guava paste or milk caramel, and are quite large. Their decoration is very colorful, resembling the traditional clothing of the indigenous people of the Ecuadorian highlands.
