Twelve minutes later, Anesthesiologist A, having finished administering anesthesia to the patient, left the hospital hallway in civilian clothes after removing his surgical gown. This was before Orthopedic Surgeon B had even entered the operating room. Naturally, I assumed he was just going back and forth in the anesthesia room.] Shortly after the surgery ended, when the patient did not regain consciousness even after being woken, a nurse who sensed signs of trouble contacted Anesthesiologist A on two occasions. A instructed that an antidote be administered both times; however, nine minutes after the second dose of the antidote was given, the patient went into cardiac arrest. The patient, a mother of middle and high school students, has not regained consciousness due to hypoxic brain damage even after nearly three months. I'm telling her daughters that it seems unlikely Mom will be able to come back.] Medical textbooks published by the Korean Society of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine stipulate that an anesthesiologist must administer anesthesia while continuously monitoring the patient's condition. It also clearly states that even when an anesthesiologist is absent, a medical professional skilled in the field of anesthesia must be present by the patient's side while the anesthetic is being administered. It also emphasizes that the anesthesiologist—that is, the doctor—must stay by the patient's side until the patient fully regains consciousness or is moved to a recovery room.
