►BMW's S55 engine was a blessing for M fans worldwide. Although it meant the end for its predecessors' high-revving, naturally-aspirated engines, the turbocharged straight-six is an ultra-reliable, overbuilt powerhouse that produces a fat power band in stock form. However, pushing beyond factory output stresses the timing chain drive system. If you want to take advantage of the S55's ability to make significant power, you should look into installing a modified crankshaft hub. In part one of this pinned crank hub replacement, you'll get a feel for just how involved this job is. You'll need to drop the oil pan and mechanically lock the timing system with special tools to ensure it all goes back together in the proper orientation, which will cause severe damage if not done correctly. On top of that, you'll need to acquire a handful of specialty tools even to reach the parts you're replacing.
