After recovering a little, we went for a walk through the streets. Karpacz is a small town with a population of only 4500 people. It was founded as a settlement of gold diggers in the 12th century. Then the city for 200 years became the center of folk herbalism and phytotherapy. After the construction of the chapel of St. Lawrence on Śnieżka Karpacz is on the path of the so-called pilgrimage tourism. Our hotel has a super location. Almost in the center of the city with incredible views of the mountains. And right behind the hotel - delightful cascades of waterfalls. The dam on the river Lomnica was created primarily because of the destructive power of water and rockslides, which threatened the structures - bridges, streets and railway embankments. What a disappointment, the dam is under reconstruction. According to legend, there lived in Karkonosze a maiden of extraordinary beauty, Dobrognev, with whom everyone was in love, including the spirit of the mountains. The mountain spirit kidnapped her to his castle. To save the maiden from boredom, the spirit gave her a kilo of turnips and a magic wand. Thanks to the wand, the bride could turn vegetables into friends. So that her beloved's friends would not run out, the Mountain Spirit planted turnips all over the yard. One day the girl decided to trick the spirit and asked him to count all the turnips that were growing. In the meantime, she herself ran away from the castle. Since then, the mountain spirit was called Lichizhepa (from the Polish "count the turnips"). It is still believed that the storms and thunderstorms that occur in the Karkonosze Mountains are an expression of the anger of the deceived Lichizhepa. A few interesting facts about Karpacz. Here is the smallest street in Poland - its length is 30 m, width - only 3 m. Near the Town Hall, in the center of Karpacz, there is Conquerors' Square, dedicated to the Polish mountaineers. The Church of the Holy Trinity Wang is located at an altitude of 885 m above sea level. The unique Scandinavian architecture is fascinating. It is an entirely wooden church without the use of nails. It was built in Vang, Norway at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries.But in the end it was built in the city near Śnieżka, because at that time there were not enough places for prayers in Karpacz. Later, a stone bell tower was added, which additionally protects the church from the strong winds blowing from Śnieżka. The interior is decorated with original elements and sculptures: dragons, lions, Viking faces. On a stretch of Strażacka Street you can see a strange physical phenomenon - empty bottles, cars roll uphill at idle speed. In fact, this phenomenon is an example of optical deception. On Karkonoska Street there is a miniature love mill. Here once stood a real mill, whose waters had magical properties of mutual love. Therefore, even today this place attracts couples in love. In a small forest on Grodno Hill there is a hunting castle built in 1806, named after its owner and founder - Prince Henry Castle. It can be reached from the parking lot by an easy route in 30 minutes or by a steep route in 20 minutes. From the top of the tower of the castle you can enjoy a breathtaking view of almost the entire range of Karkonosze. Honestly, I didn't expect this from Karpacz.
